Chronologically, the existence of Homo erectus in Sangiran dated back from 1.5 to 0.3 million years ago with a more than a million year evolutional period.

A morphological analysis on Sangiran’s hominid fossils had classified two evolutional grades as follows: an archaic Homo erectus from the Lower Pleistocene and a typical Homo erectus from the Upper Pleistocene.

The archaic Homo erectus lived around 1.5-1 million years ago, while Us descendant, the Typical Homo erectus lived around 0.9 to 0.3 million year ago.

In a broader view during the Pleistocene, there was the later and more developed Homo erectus type than those mentioned previously. This type was called as the Progressive Homo erectus which had never been found in Sangiran but in Ngandong (Blora), Sambungmacan (Sragen), and Selopuro (Ngawi). It lived around 200,000-100,000 years ago.
