OPEN CALL “The Advancement of Culture Residency in 2024” Discover the richness of Indonesia’s cultural heritage and local wisdom through the Culture Residency Program in 2024, a pioneering initiative by the Directorate General of Culture, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of The Republic of Indonesia (MoECRT RI).

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: “The Advancement of Culture Residency in 2024” program is a visionary endeavor aimed at enhancing the educational landscape by integrating cultural heritage and local wisdom into the curriculum. By doing so, we aspire to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indonesia’s diverse cultural tapestry among the younger generation. The residency consists of 3 different categories, which are:

  1. Musicalization of Rhymes and Oral Traditions (Located at Pekanbaru City, Riau Province) This residency type is intended to create a learning program with cultural actors as an important source of learning for the community and among artists. This residency also serves as a repository for ideas and a repertoire of participants whose work originates from oral literature and traditional music, offering to strengthen influence, improve skills and understanding, and encourage the formation of creative strategies in new musical directions. This innovative collaboration takes place in a hybrid manner, an experimental work produced in new ways by artists across fields who network with professional sources.
  2. Losari Mask Dance (Located at Cirebon City, West Java Province) Residency at Losari Mask Dance a very valuable initiative in efforts to preserve and develop traditional arts and culture. Through this program, participants not only gain knowledge and technical skills in dancing but also understand the historical and cultural values ​​contained in it. This residency is a bridge between the past and the future, ensuring that the legacy of Losari mask dance continues to live and be relevant amidst changing times. Therefore, this residency not only benefits individual participants but also significantly contributes to the preservation and development of traditional Indonesian arts as a whole.
  3. Jemparingan – Traditional Sport (Special Region of Yogyakarta) Jemparingan is a traditional archery sport based on culture. With Gendewa (bow) and Jemparing (arrow) as the main tools. Only one in the world, as a differentiator from other traditional archery, Jemparingan is played in the position sitting cross-legged (basic concept) during the archery activities. Residency participants are expected to be able to develop and utilize Jemparingan art more widely and use Jemparingan art as a source for various works, such as scientific writing, films, traditional-based video games, etc.

DURATION: 1 August – Friday 30 August 2024 WHAT WE OFFER:

  • Guidance from Maestros: Participants have the unique opportunity to learn directly from Indonesian senior cultural artists, who share their expertise and insights accumulated over decades of dedication to their craft.
  • Cultural Immersion: Through workshops and immersive experiences, participants delve deep into the heart of Indonesian culture, gaining a profound understanding of its traditions, values, and artistic expressions.
  • Skill Enhancement: The program equips participants with practical skills and techniques essential for preserving and innovating within Indonesia’s cultural heritage landscape.
  • Cultural collaboration: Participants have the chance to exchange cultural information on their own culture to be able to create new artwork.

Beyond that, MoECRT RI will support and provide facilities for all participants with details:

  • Accommodations and Workspace
  • Health insurance
  • Local Transportations
  • Meals (3 times a day)
  • Internet Data
  • Grant of collaboration production of 3,160 USD (Rp 50.000.000)
  • Allowance of 506 USD (Rp 8.060.000)

NOTES: The participants who are not living in Indonesia need to self-cover the travel airfare expenses to and from Indonesia. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: The Advancement of Culture Residency in 2024 Program welcomes aspiring cultural artists, educators, researchers, and enthusiasts who are passionate about preserving and celebrating Indonesia’s cultural heritage with certain criteria, which are:

  • Participants aged between 20 – 35 years old
  • The participants must have proven experience minimum of 3 years in the field of Performance Arts (including Musical Composition, Artwork, Research, and Cultural Management) proven by Portfolio.
  • Have a good capability of speaking English, as it will be the primary language of communication during the residency.
