Karawitan is a form of orchestra from gamelan instruments. The words karawitan derives from Sanskrit language rawit which means harmony, elegance, and gentleness. Additionally, some people define it as pangrawit which means the person or the subject who possesses harmonious and gentle feelings. There is also an argument that it comes from the word ngerawit which in Javanese language means very complicated. Thus, performing karawitan is not merely producing sound but also elucidating deeply through its gendhing (songs). In Sangiran, exactly in Plupuh District, there is a group named Tardi Laras that is continuously performing karawitan for many events.
